The café was lively as usual, with the smell of freshly baked pastries filling the air. This week, the group gathered around their usual table, each with a cup of their favorite drink. Lily arrived with a little surprise—her daughter Anna, who was holding a small stuffed dog.
“Say hello, Anna,” Lily encouraged.
“Hello!” Anna said shyly, clutching her toy.
“She wanted to come today,” Lily explained. “We’re talking about animals, and she loves them.”
“Perfect timing,” Diego said, smiling at Anna. “I bet you know a lot about animals, don’t you?”
Anna nodded enthusiastically. “I love dogs the most!”
Diego and His Parrot
The conversation kicked off with Diego. He leaned back in his chair and said, “At home in Argentina, my family has a parrot named Rico. He’s very noisy but so funny.”
“What does Rico say?” Maria asked, curious.
Diego grinned. “He loves to say ‘Hola!’ and ‘Diego, clean your room!’ My mom taught him that.”
The group laughed.
“Does Rico ever get quiet?” Chen asked.
“Rarely. He likes to talk all day, especially when we’re eating. He even tries to eat our food,” Diego said, shaking his head.
Maria and Her Cat
Maria sipped her tea and said, “I have a cat named Bella. She’s very independent and loves to sleep on my laptop when I’m working.”
“Does she play with you?” Alex asked.
“Not much. She’s lazy, but she loves it when I brush her fur. She purrs so loudly,” Maria replied. “I adopted her from a shelter three years ago.”
“That’s wonderful,” Fatima said. “Cats from shelters need good homes.”
Alex’sLove for Exotic Animals
Alex leaned forward, excited to share. “I don’t have a pet right now, but I’ve always wanted a snake.”
“A snake?” Lily exclaimed, looking surprised.
“Yes! They’re so cool. I like how they move and their unique patterns. They’re quiet too,” Alex said.
“I think I’d be too scared,” Chen admitted.
Alex laughed. “They’re not for everyone, but I find them fascinating.”
Lily’s Busy Life with a Dog
Lily smiled and said, “We have a dog, a golden retriever named Max. He’s Anna’s best friend.”
Anna chimed in, “Max loves to play fetch! And he eats my food sometimes.”
“Max keeps us all active,” Lily added. “He needs a lot of walks, but he’s so loving and gentle. He even sleeps by Anna’s bed at night.”
“That’s sweet,” Maria said. “Dogs are great companions.”
Chen’s Dream of a Pet
Chen looked a little wistful. “I’ve never had a pet before. My apartment is too small. But I’d love to have a fish tank someday. Fish are so calming to watch.”
“Do you know what kind of fish you’d get?” Fatima asked.
“Maybe goldfish or colorful tropical fish,” Chen said. “I think taking care of them would help me relax after work.”
Fatima’s Family Farm
Fatima’s eyes lit up as she spoke. “My family back in Morocco has a small farm. We have chickens, goats, and even a donkey. I miss them so much.”
“Do you help with the animals when you visit?” Maria asked.
“Yes! I collect eggs from the chickens and feed the goats. The donkey, Samir, is very friendly. He lets us pet him,” Fatima said with a smile.
“That sounds amazing,” Diego said. “I’d love to visit a farm like that someday.”
Learning New Words
Maria opened her notebook again. “Let’s write down some words related to animals and pets. This is good vocabulary to practice.”
They made a list:
- Dog
- Cat
- Parrot
- Snake
- Fish
- Chickens
- Goat
- Donkey
Then, Maria asked, “Let’s make sentences about animals. Who wants to start?”
Diego began. “My parrot Rico talks a lot.”
Maria followed. “My cat Bella likes to sleep on my laptop.”
Anna, with a little help from Lily, said, “Max is my best friend.”
Discussing Favorite Animals
“What’s your favorite animal?” Maria asked the group.
“I love tigers,” Alex said. “They’re strong and beautiful.”
“Pandas,” Chen added. “They look so peaceful.”
“Elephants,” Fatima said. “They are intelligent and gentle.”
“Penguins for me,” Maria said. “They’re so cute when they waddle.”
The group laughed and agreed that animals were a wonderful topic to talk about.
Planning for Next Week
As the meeting ended, Lily suggested, “Next week, let’s talk about homes and our neighbourhoods. I think everyone will have fun with that.”
“Yes!” Diego said. “I think that will be interesting.”
“I think so too,” Fatima added.
Maria smiled. “Perfect. See you all next week!”
