The following week, the group decided to meet at Maria’s home. She had invited everyone over for coffee and cake. The cozy living room was decorated with family photos and colorful cushions, making it feel warm and inviting.
“I hope everyone likes chocolate cake,” Maria said, setting the dessert on the table.
“You’re spoiling us, Maria,” Alex said, taking a seat.
“Thank you for inviting us,” Fatima added. “Your home is beautiful.”
“Thank you,” Maria replied. “And today, I thought we could talk about our families and friends. It’s always nice to know more about the people we care about.”
Maria’s Family
Maria pointed to a photo on the wall. It showed her with two elderly people. “This is my mom and dad,” she said. “They live in Spain, in a small village near the mountains. My dad was a farmer, and my mom worked in a bakery.”
“Do you visit them often?” Diego asked.
“Not as much as I want to,” Maria said with a sigh. “But we talk on the phone every week.”
She picked up another photo from the table. It showed her and two young boys. “These are my nephews, Luis and Mateo. They’re very naughty, but I love them.”
Diego’s Family
“Your family sounds lovely,” Diego said. “My family is very big. I have three brothers and two sisters. We all grew up in Mexico, but now we live in different cities.”
“That must be noisy during holidays!” Chen said with a smile.
Diego laughed. “Yes, very noisy! But we always have fun. My youngest brother, Javier, is only 15. He likes to play video games, and I always lose when I play with him!”
“Do you see them often?” Fatima asked.
“Not often, but we have video calls every month,” Diego replied.
Chen’s Friends
“Chen, what about you?” Maria asked.
Chen hesitated. “I do not have a big family. I have one sister. She lives in China with my parents. I talk to them once a week. But I have many friends here. My best friend is David. He works with me, and he is very funny. He helps me with English, too.”
“Friends can feel like family,” Maria said kindly.
“Yes,” Chen agreed, smiling.
Fatima’s Siblings
Fatima leaned back in her chair. “I have four sisters,” she said. “We are all very close. My oldest sister lives in London. She is a teacher. My youngest sister is 18, and she is studying art.”
“Wow, that’s a lot of sisters!” Alex said.
“Yes,” Fatima said with a laugh. “We used to fight a lot when we were kids, but now we support each other. They are my best friends.”
Alex’s Best Friend
“What about you, Alex?” Diego asked.
“I don’t have brothers or sisters,” Alex said. “But I have a best friend, Peter. We’ve been friends since we were 10 years old. He lives in another city now, but we talk all the time. He’s like a brother to me.”
“That’s wonderful,” Maria said.
Alex nodded. “He’s very loyal. And he always listens to my problems.”
Lily’s Family
Lily smiled as she spoke. “I have a husband and two children, a boy and a girl. My husband, Adam, is very kind and helpful. He loves playing with the kids. My son, Tom, is six, and my daughter, Anna, is four.”
“Do they go to school?” Chen asked.
“Yes, Tom goes to school. Anna stays home with me,” Lily explained. “They keep me very busy, but I enjoy it.”
A Group Activity
After sharing their stories, Maria brought out a notebook and pen. “Let’s practice describing family and friends,” she suggested. “We can ask each other questions and write short answers.”
Maria started. “Chen, can you describe your sister?”
Chen thought for a moment. “My sister is kind. She is very smart. She works in a bank.”
“Good job, Chen!” Maria said. “Now, ask Fatima a question.”
“Fatima, what does your oldest sister do?”
Fatima replied, “She is a teacher. She teaches history to high school students.”
The group continued the exercise, helping each other with vocabulary and grammar.
Wrapping Up
As the evening ended, Maria handed out small pieces of paper. “Write one sentence about someone in your family or a friend. Bring it next time, and we’ll read them together.”
“Good idea,” Diego said. “It will help us practice more.”
Lily looked around the group. “I’m learning so much about all of you. It feels like we are a family, too.”
The group smiled, nodding in agreement.
