Transitive and Intransitive Verbs

Verbs can also be classified based on whether they require an object to complete their meaning.

1. Transitive Verbs

Transitive verbs require a direct object to receive the action of the verb. Without the object, the sentence does not convey a complete idea.

  • Examples: bring, buy, enjoy, see, love
  • In Sentences:
    • She bought a new phone. (What did she buy? A phone.)
    • They love the movie. (What do they love? The movie.)

2. Intransitive Verbs

Intransitive verbs do not require a direct object; they make complete sense on their own.

  • Examples: arrive, go, sleep, swim, sneeze
  • In Sentences:
    • He arrived late. (No object needed.)
    • She swims every day. (No object needed.)

Note: Some verbs can be both transitive and intransitive depending on how they are used.

  • Transitive: She reads books. (What does she read? Books.)
  • Intransitive: She reads. (No object needed.)
