Chapter 8: On the Move

The group decided to meet at a café near the main train station to discuss transportation and how they get around in their respective cities. The location was perfect—bustling with people, surrounded by buses, trams, and bicycles zipping by.

“I thought this spot would be great for today’s topic,” Maria said as everyone settled in with their coffees. “Let’s talk about how we travel in our cities and share tips for getting around.”

Maria’s Trams and Bicycles

Maria began, “In Kraków, I usually take the tram. It’s cheap and fast. The tram stops are close to my apartment, so it’s very convenient.”

“Do you ever drive?” Diego asked.

“No,” Maria replied. “I don’t have a car. But I sometimes use a bike to go to the park or nearby places. There are bike paths all over the city.”

“That sounds nice,” Fatima said. “It must be peaceful to ride a bike.”

“It is,” Maria nodded. “But in winter, I stick to the tram. It’s too cold to cycle!”

Diego’s Love for Buses

“In Buenos Aires, the bus is king,” Diego said with a grin. “There are buses everywhere. You can go anywhere in the city for a low price.”

“Are they crowded?” Alex asked.

“Very,” Diego admitted. “But they run all day and night, so it’s easy to get around. I also use the subway when I need to go faster. And sometimes, I take a taxi when I’m in a hurry.”

“Sounds like you have many options,” Lily said.

“Yes,” Diego replied. “But traffic can be crazy, so you have to plan your trips.”

Fatima’s Taxis and Walking

Fatima spoke next. “In Fes, I usually walk. The streets are small, and many places are close to each other.”

“That must be nice,” Chen said.

“It is,” Fatima agreed. “But when I need to go farther, I take a taxi. They are cheap and easy to find.”

“Do you have buses?” Alex asked.

“Yes,” Fatima said. “But they are not always on time. I prefer walking or using a taxi.”

Alex’s Subway Adventures

“In New York, the subway is the best way to travel,” Alex said. “It’s fast and runs all the time. But it can be confusing for visitors.”

“Why?” Maria asked.

“There are so many lines and stops,” Alex explained. “It’s easy to get lost. But once you understand it, it’s great.”

“Do you ever drive?” Lily asked.

“No,” Alex said. “Driving in New York is a nightmare. The traffic is terrible, and parking is expensive. I also use buses and sometimes walk when it’s nice out.”

Lily’s Country Roads

“In my town, there aren’t many buses,” Lily said. “Most people drive. I have a small car, and I use it to go shopping or visit friends.”

“Do you ever walk?” Diego asked.

“Yes,” Lily said. “I walk when the weather is nice. But if I need to go far, I have to drive. The roads are quiet, so it’s easy to travel.”

“That sounds relaxing,” Chen said.

Chen’s High-Speed Trains

“In Shanghai, we have everything—buses, subways, taxis, and even high-speed trains,” Chen said. “I use the subway the most because it’s fast and cheap.”

“Do you ever drive?” Maria asked.

“No,” Chen said. “Driving in Shanghai is stressful. The traffic is bad, and finding parking is hard. I also take high-speed trains when I travel to other cities. They are very fast and comfortable.”

“That sounds amazing,” Fatima said.

Practicing Vocabulary

Maria wrote words on her notebook:

  • Bus
  • Train
  • Subway
  • Taxi
  • Bicycle
  • Traffic
  • Parking
  • Ticket

“Let’s make sentences with these words,” Maria suggested.

Diego said, “I take the bus to work.”
Fatima added, “I walk because there is no traffic.”
Chen tried, “I buy a ticket for the subway.”

Sharing Tips

Maria had another idea. “Let’s share travel tips for visitors to our cities.”

“In Buenos Aires, always carry small change for buses,” Diego said.

“In New York, check the subway map before you travel,” Alex added.

“In Fes, agree on the price before you take a taxi,” Fatima said.

“In Shanghai, avoid rush hour on the subway,” Chen suggested.

The group laughed as they imagined trying to navigate each other’s cities.
