Week 6: Describing Your Home and Neighborhood

The sun filtered through the large windows of the café as the group settled into their seats. This week, the table was filled with sketches, photos, and even a few small souvenirs from everyone’s homes. Maria had suggested they each bring something that represented their living space or neighborhood.

“I thought it would be fun to see where everyone lives,” Maria said, smiling as she placed a photo of her apartment on the table.

Maria’s Cozy Apartment

Maria began. “I live in a small apartment. It has two rooms—a bedroom and a living room. There’s also a tiny kitchen, but it’s enough for me.”

She pointed to the photo. “This is my balcony. I grow flowers there. In the spring, it’s very colorful.”

“That’s beautiful!” Fatima said. “What kind of flowers do you grow?”

“Mostly roses and tulips. I love taking care of them,” Maria replied.

“Do you have a favorite spot in your home?” Diego asked.

“My couch,” Maria said, laughing. “It’s so comfortable. I read there every evening.”

Diego’s Busy Neighborhood

Diego held up a sketch he had drawn. “This is a map of my neighborhood in Buenos Aires. It’s very lively. There are cafés, parks, and a big market near my house.”

“That sounds amazing,” Chen said. “Do you go to the market often?”

“Yes,” Diego said. “It’s the best place to buy fresh fruit. I also love the street food there. Empanadas are my favorite.”

“What’s your house like?” Maria asked.

Diego shrugged. “It’s simple. Two bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen. But the best part is the rooftop. We have barbecues there with my family.”

Fatima’s Family Home in Morocco

Fatima shared a small woven basket. “This is from my family’s home. We use it to carry bread or fruit.”

She continued, “Our house is in a quiet village. It’s made of stone, and we have a big courtyard. My favorite place is the rooftop, where we watch the stars at night.”

“Is your village far from the city?” Alex asked.

“Yes, very far. We have to drive for an hour to reach the nearest city,” Fatima said. “But I love the peace and quiet.”

Alex’s Modern Apartment

Alex placed his phone on the table, showing a picture of his apartment. “This is my living room. I like modern designs, so my furniture is all black and white.”

“It looks very clean,” Lily said.

“It has to be,” Alex said. “I work from home, so I spend a lot of time there. My favorite spot is my desk near the window. The view is great.”

“What’s your neighborhood like?” Diego asked.

“It’s busy but safe. There’s a gym nearby, and I go there every morning,” Alex replied.

Chen’s Compact Space

Chen looked a little shy as he spoke. “I live in a very small apartment. It’s just one room with a small kitchen.”

“That must be hard,” Maria said kindly.

“It’s okay,” Chen replied. “I keep it very neat. I have a shelf for my books and a small table for eating and working.”

“What about your neighborhood?” Fatima asked.

“It’s in the city center, so everything is close. There’s a park where I run every weekend. I love that,” Chen said.

Lily’s Family Home

Lily smiled as she showed a picture of her house. “This is our home. It’s a small house with a garden. We live in a quiet neighborhood.”

Anna, who was sitting next to her, added, “I love the garden! We grow tomatoes and flowers.”

“Our neighborhood is very friendly,” Lily continued. “The neighbors know each other, and we often meet in the park nearby.”

“Do you like gardening?” Chen asked.

“Yes, but Max—our dog—loves to dig up the plants!” Lily said with a laugh.

Discussing Vocabulary

Maria opened her notebook. “Let’s write down some words about homes and neighborhoods. These are important words to know.”

The group came up with:

  • Apartment
  • House
  • Living room
  • Kitchen
  • Bedroom
  • Balcony
  • Garden
  • Park
  • Market

Sharing Descriptions

Maria suggested an activity. “Let’s each describe our home or neighborhood in one sentence.”

Diego started. “My neighborhood is lively, with many places to eat.”

Maria followed. “My apartment is small but cozy, and I love my balcony.”

Chen said, “My home is tiny, but it’s close to everything I need.”

Fatima shared, “My house has a big courtyard and is very peaceful.”

Lily said, “Our house is small, but the garden makes it special.”

Alex added, “My apartment is modern and perfect for working from home.”

Planning Next Week

As the meeting wrapped up, Alex suggested, “Next week, let’s talk about cities and local attractions. I think that will be fun.”

“Great idea!” Maria said. “I love talking about my city.”

“See you all next week,” Lily said, gathering her things.
