Verb Tenses Overview

Verb tenses indicate the time when an action takes place: past, present, or future. Each tense has different aspects that express whether the action is simple, continuous (ongoing), or perfect (completed).

Present Tenses: Simple, Continuous

  1. Present Simple Tense
    • Usage: Describes habitual actions, general truths, and fixed arrangements.
    • Form: Base form of the verb (add -s/-es for third-person singular).
    • Examples:
      • I work every day.
      • The sun rises in the east.
  2. Present Continuous (Progressive) Tense
    • Usage: Describes actions happening at the moment of speaking or ongoing actions.
    • Form: am/is/are + verb + -ing
    • Examples:
      • She is reading a book right now.
      • They are playing soccer.

Past Tenses: Simple, Continuous, Perfect

  1. Past Simple Tense
    • Usage: Describes completed actions that took place at a specific time in the past.
    • Form: Regular verbs: verb + -ed; irregular verbs: unique forms.
    • Examples:
      • We watched a movie yesterday.
      • He went to the park.
  2. Past Continuous (Progressive) Tense
    • Usage: Describes actions that were ongoing in the past, often interrupted by another action.
    • Form: was/were + verb + -ing
    • Examples:
      • I was reading when the phone rang.
      • They were studying all night.
  3. Past Perfect Tense
    • Usage: Describes an action that was completed before another past action.
    • Form: had + past participle
    • Examples:
      • She had finished her homework before the movie started.
      • By the time we arrived, they had left.

Future Tenses: Will, Going to, Continuous

  1. Future Simple (Will)
    • Usage: Describes spontaneous decisions, predictions, or promises.
    • Form: will + base form of the verb
    • Examples:
      • I will call you later.
      • She will win the race.
  2. Going to (Future Intention)
    • Usage: Describes planned actions or events, and predictions based on evidence.
    • Form: am/is/are + going to + base form of the verb
    • Examples:
      • I am going to visit my grandmother next weekend.
      • Look at the clouds! It is going to rain.
  3. Future Continuous (Progressive)
    • Usage: Describes actions that will be ongoing at a specific time in the future.
    • Form: will be + verb + -ing
    • Examples:
      • This time tomorrow, I will be flying to New York.
      • They will be working all night.
